One of my biggest bass influences and one of my all-time favourite artists has recently released a new album. And whilst I’ll post a clip of her cover of an old 90’s TLC cover, I want to focus on a few of my favourite songs from her previous album ‘Comet Come To Me.’
Meshell has always been the absolute baddest bass players on the planet, her groove is instantly recognisable and totally undeniable. But she is also an incredible singer and producer. I love the ‘sound’ of her albums. Everything is sublimely subtle, you always hear something new when listening to her music.
Tom, the track below, man I love the vocals, the harmonies, the vibrato guitar, the bass plodding along keeping that groove going, she’s got horns in there too – it’s such an interesting sonic palette, it’s so uniquely Meshell.
And for something completely different, ‘Good Day Bad’ – the intro, the acoustic guitar, that opening lyric “I’m surprised every sunrise, the earth would have me back.” Enter vibrato electric guitar, that bass plodding along again… OMG… it’s like an eargasm. And Meshell’s voice floating over like a butterfly in a light breeze. The vibrato guitar at 1:38 – FARK! So good!! And is that a fucking banjo??! She just makes it all sound so gorgeous.
I’ll leave you with one song. ‘Choices’ – iInteresting, melodic, some beautiful painful sounds and still that phat bass. My only criticism for this album is that some of the songs aren’t great (in my opinion). There are some incredibly beautiful songs, some of my favourite songs by Meshell throughout her entire catalogue, but for me there are a few that I skip (which is sacrilege!) I just don’t feel like the songs are written with the same depth of feeling. But again, that is my option and I hope you enjoy what I’ve shared here with you.
Check out Meshell where ever you can find her and digest her music, she is a true original.
